Having you ever gone shopping for a new car and now you see that model EVERYWHERE?  Or perhaps you’ve been driving down the road and suddenly realize you can’t remember the last five minutes!  Was that light red?  These are all results of the Reticular Activating System or RAS.  



"What is RAS"?  I’m glad you asked!  Technically and medically speaking, it’s a loose network of neurons and fiber that connect to the spinal cord, travel through the brain stem up to the mid-brain.  Practically speaking, it’s something that affects ALL of us yet less than 2% of people actually have ever heard of it and the effect it has on their day to day lives.



How Does RAS Affect Me?

RAS is the attention center of the brain.  It controls what you have told it are important to you and RASshuts out the “white noise” of life that isn’t.  In other words, when you put in search criteria, it helps you focus on and find that which it has been told is important.  You’ve heard if you want to find positive people to be positive.  That’s RAS.  You’re focused on a positive attitude and your RAS seeks and finds people with that quality for you.  On the opposite side, are you a “dramaholic” and wonder why you can’t get rid of the drama in your life?  Yes, that too is your RAS.


Parents of teenagers will understand this one -- I remember when our daughters first started driving.  Although I might fall asleep before their curfew and regardless of how quiet they tried to be, the minute their car turned in the driveway, I woke up. Again, the RAS.



How Can I Train My Brain?
Postive Thoughts


It seems so cliche to say “Garbage In, Garbage Out” or “Think Positive Thoughts”. But it’s true.  Visualize yourself getting/doing/being whatever it is you want and your RAS will search it out for you.  You can’t make chicken soup if you put an old shoe in the pot.  Likewise you can’t be a success if you don’t think like a winner!

Here are some things to try:

  • Give yourself some Positive Self-Talk
  • Have a picture of your goal in your office or car.
  • Read positive material.    Don’t have time to read an entire book, pick a book of positive quotes.
  • Before you go to bed make sure you think positive thoughts.  Perhaps visualize yourself completing a task.
  • Avoid negative people, places or things that could distract your RAS.
