Make sure and check out the history of this man-made lake as it is quite interesting. You can also visit the dam and picnic area. If you're a bit of a thrill seeker, you can go white-water rafting, either with a guide or on your own, on the Nantahala River. If you're not quite that adventurous you'll have a lot fun and photo opps watching the kayaks battle the intense rapids near the rafting take-out. For the motorcycle enthusiast, Cody Branch is about 20 minutes from Deal's Gap and the start of the famed Tail of the Dragon with its' 318 curves in 11 miles. If you're looking for a more relaxed day ride, why not take on the Cherohala Skyway to the west or the Blue Ridge Parkway to the east. Motorcycle or not, if you're heading east you'll find Bryson City with it's quaint downtown antique shops, scenic train ride and community theatre to be a fun day trip. Travel a few more miles and you'll find the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harrah's Casino! Leave Cherokee on Highway 441 and take a scenic 40 minute ride over Newfound Gap and you'll find yourself in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge - home of Dollywood and tons of outlet stores! If you like history and nature, take a side trip off Hwy 441 toward Townsend and spend the day at Cades Cove. There is also a campground here as well as horseback riding. This is a great location for spotting elk, deer, black bear and other wildlife that call the Great Smoky Mountain National Park home.
